Your Name Isn't Mud!
Do not give yourself or other mountain bikers a bad name by riding on trails during the spring thaw. The recent warm weather may be melting the snow, but the sub-surface layers of soil are still partially frozen. Trails are critically sensitive to erosion damage at this time. Currently, water from the melting snow is unable to sink into the soil, so trail surfaces are muddy. Tire ruts help channel this water and contribute to erosion and muddy spots that can become long-term trail damage. A good rule of thumb is that when the earthworms begin to emerge, the ground is thawed. Please ride on pavement or gravel roads for a few more weeks while the trails properly thaw and dry out. Help us keep trails open to mountain biking by riding in an environmentally sound manner.0
Phill wood RIP
Hub-Maker Phil Wood Passes Away BAXTER, IA (BRAIN)—Phil Wood, the man responsible for sealed hubs and bottom brackets, died this week on his farm in Baxter, Iowa. He was 84. He started the Phil Wood Company in 1971 as primarily a hub maker, though he offered other components. He sold the business to Peter Enright and a group of investors in 1991. “I feel so lucky to have talked with him about a week before he passed away, and he mentioned again that he was so lucky to sell the business when he did,” said Enright, Phil Wood Company’s president. “We talked off and on over the years, usually to catch up on news about his friends in the bike business. But he was quite happy to return to the farm after selling the business to help raise his granddaughter,” Enright added. Wood was a problem-solver working at Food Machinery Corporation. Had he not been bothered chasing bearings for a hub he was rebuilding for his daughter, sealed-bearing hubs might have taken years to hit the bike market, Enright noted. “He was complaining to Spence Wolf about why no one offered a sealed bearing hub and Wolf told him to make his own hub. A little while later he asked Spence how many he should make. It took Spence a bit to remember what he was talking about. He said make 50 hubs and the business was launched,” Enright said. Wood’s family is deciding on funeral arrangements at this time. “I’m glad he and I were able to have that last chat. He was a little bothered he wasn’t as ambulatory as he once was but he was content to move on,” Enright said. —Matt Wiebe

Here at HGC world hear Quarters many hours are spent in front of a computer screen. Most of the time trying to find new interesting bicycle related content, and keeping current with the local bicycle community. A lot that describes HGC can be seen in this photo (including the lack of proper lighting for a proper photograph). As you can see from the Physics book hasn't been put to much use except to provide a platform for bicycle related media, such as bicycle frame design videos and related literature. Other items you may find within our clutter good beer, head phones linked to good music ( the link is to the band were currently listing to), and a Red Wings bobble head for good luck ( it worked Wings just beat nashville 4-2). Some times you need to clean the clutter, but now is not that time, right now HGC is going to conduct a virtual meeting on Call Of Duty.

2010 Events
Fellow peddlers... As of now there are two events worth noting in the upcoming year that the HGC Crew will be part of... 1. Cherry-Roubaix (www.cherry-roubaix.com) to be held in Traverse City the weekend of August 27-28, 2010. Events include an Old Town Criterium race, a 12 mile road race, the Jolly Pumpkin Cruiser Classic, trials competitions, concerts, bicycling themed documentaries as featured in the annual New York Bicycle Film Festival, Fixie Stationary race, and various other fun exibitions and displays. 2. Tour de Troit (www.tour-de-troit.org) the 9th annual ride will be held in September (TBD) in the streets of Detroit. This 30 mile, police escorted leisurly ride is held annualy in an attempt to raise awareness of biking as a mode of transportation, to publicize the growing greenways network in the region, and to raise funds for the Corktown-Mexicantown Greenlink. Hell Yes Sprints
HomeGrownCycles had a strong showing at the Hell Yes Sprints on Tuesday at the Blind Pig putting up some impressive numbers, but in the end just falling short of qualifying times. This was the first of hopefully many sprint series HGC will compete in, we would like to thank Hell Yes for a good time, and also thank Big Yellow for getting us to the Blind Pig with out breaking down, also we would like to thank matisyahu for letting Justin in.0

I was recently at my local coffee shop when I was shocked to see water in a box. The most surprising thing is that it seemed almost too simple of an idea. I was happy to find that The Boxed Water Is Better company is located in Grand Rapids, we here at HGC like to support local business, especially those who are doing their part. 20 percent of their profits go towards water relief, and forest restoration federations. I generally don't drink bottled water since It's easy enough to get it from the tap, but i would be amazed to find that 20 percent of my water bill is going towards such a cause. Read more

Gears were available at that time yet riders on the Tour were regulated to a single speed.?Multiple gears were for bicycle tourists, and they took away from the purity of the sport of cycle racing, according to the organizer at the time. Riders climbed and descended the same mountain passes as the modern tour with a single gear.

A few of us here at HomeGrownCycles like to tool around the city on our fixies, and have decided that we will soon be playing some bike polo. This old junker bike would be great for polo and cruising around town. The only problem: the bike was in our neighbor's yard.
