Detroit Bikes - A-Type review

For the past two years I have been working with Detroit Bikes to design and build an affordable bicycle made here in the motor city.  Here is a review of the A-type  that will go into full production in July.

Anatomy of a Detroit Bike

BicycleIt has been a busy year for Detroit Bikes, setting up a factory on Detroit's west side all while keeping up production to get the bikes finalized for a spring launch.

March 1st is the anticipated launch of the website, at which time orders can be placed.  The Detroit Bikes bicycle is a basic commuter style with a relaxed  upright geometry for comfort. It is combined with a slightly shorter  wheelbase for quicker response and extra maneuverability.  Made from .035" walled 4130 chromoly steel, the frame is extremely light and strong, which is an extra bonus if you have to lug it up a flight of stairs.

The front fork was designed to have a slight industrial look by using flat plate mild steel for the bridges and dropouts, combined with true temper  chromoly tubing with a mild bend to help absorb vibration on rough roads.  The bike is made to be simplistic and appeal to the average consumer who is looking to get from point A to point B. The bicycle comes with a nexus 3 speed coaster break hub that is easily adjustable, eliminating  the need to know the inner workings of a derailleur system for proper shifting.

bicycle rackThe Bicycle is designed, tig welded, and assembled in the city of Detroit and will make its debut in local bike shops soon. Standard sized parts (ie bottom bracket size head tube and fork steer sizes)  are used to allow for easy aftermarket upgrades.  Currently the frame, fork,  rear rack, chain guard, and fender stays are made at Detroit Bikes.    The frames are all powder coated, providing a very durable finish to the steel.  Powder coating is done on site under tightly regulated conditions to provide optimum finish and longevity of the bicycle's frame.  As production increases and manufacturing techniques improve, more parts will be created in house or sourced locally.

Keep up with Detroit Bikes via Facebook for updates and order information or at Detroitbikes.com  that will be up and running on March 1st.
